Bangalore is located in south central India on the Mysore Plateau, about 900 meters (3,000 ft.) above sea level. Bangalore has a mild, generally pleasant climate, with summer daily high temperatures around 33°C (90°F).

Some efforts are underway to rename Bangalore as Bengaluru which is the city's name in Kannada, the native language of Karnataka that is spoken by a large segment of the population.

Bangalore has a thriving IT and high tech economic base that has been booming in recent years and earned it the nickname the Silicon Valley of India. Infosys and Wipro, India's second and third largest IT companies, are both headquartered in Bangalore. In addition to high tech, Bangalore is also a major aerospace and manufacturing center.

In the past 20 years, Bangalore has grown rapidly and become increasingly cosmopolitan with a rich mix of cultures, religions, and ethnicities. Ethnically, about 40% of the population is Kannadiga with widening mix of other groups making up the balance. As is typical of India, about 80% of the population is Hindu and about 13% are Muslims. Kannada is the most widely spoken language, but English, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi are also spoken in the area.
